ARTIST STATEMENT:

My art mostly consists of ironic juxtaposition. I compare symbols of power and wealth to the symbols of the flip side of that very coin. For example, in “Congo River Luxury,” it looks like it could be a lot of places in the world, but specifically, I was looking at Africa with the child soldiers and the European powers coming in taking the resources. As you can see, I’m also appropriating straight off our fashion advertising, where I have Michael Kors stepping out of his
W magazine’s big glossy spread and docking onto an impoverished country.

Big Bambu
Big Bambú

Artists:
Mike and Doug Stern
Website: metmuseum.org
Exhibit: Doug + Mike Starn on the Roof: Big Bambú
When: Running until October 31, 2010 (weather permitting)
Where: The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden at the Met

THE SHOWCASE:

Invited by The Metropolitan Museum of Art to create a site-specific installation for The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden, twin brothers Mike and Doug Starn (born in New Jersey in 1961) present their new work,
Big Bambú: You Can't, You Don't, and You Won't Stop. The monumental bamboo structure, measuring 100 feet long, 50 feet wide, and 50 feet high, takes the form of a cresting wave that bridges realms of sculpture, architecture, and performance. Visitors witness the continuing creation and evolving incarnations of Big Bambú as it is constructed throughout the spring, summer, and fall by the artists and a team of rock climbers. Set against Central Park and its urban backdrop, Big Bambú suggests the complexity and energy of an ever-changing living organism. It is the thirteenth consecutive single-artist installation on the Roof Garden.

THE ARTIST STATEMENT:
“It is a temporary structure in a sense, but it is a sculpture—not a static sculpture, it’s an organism that we are just a part of—helping it to move along. We will be constructing a slice of seascape, like our photographs, a cutaway view of a wave constantly in motion—our growth and change remains invariable, it is constant and unchanged.” - Mike Starn
