Love, Marriage & a Baby Carriage

Here we are - six months after launch!  Before the Five Outsiders take off for three weeks, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you and share with you what’s happening now and what’s coming next.

Since launch we’ve been lucky to have a few new Outsiders join.  Deena with her eclectic artists, Sasha’s interviews with her furry pals and Tara with her cool reviews of everything indie.  Our regular guests such as Kitty deliver spectacular shots of our city and our wonderful editor, Connie, keeps us concise.

Week after week the best part of what we do is to get into the heart of the people who make this city exciting.  From Jessica jamming with her musicians to me stopping random New Yorkers in the street, it’s endless.   Whether you’re a magician, designer, acupuncturist, glass-blowing artist or poet, I can’t imagine any better way to get to know New Yorkers than doing this blog week after week.

jose rolon and tim merrell

Some changes from our side, one of which is that I am getting married this coming Saturday, May 15th.  What can I say? I’m a lucky guy blessed with a beautiful man, and life couldn’t get any better.  After this week we’re off to Hawaii for our honeymoon to relax by the beach and sip on some coconut margaritas.

Now the baby carriage: Jessica and hubby Jofré gave birth to a beautiful baby boy named Ellington Adrian Toledo.  As his honorary New York uncle, I’ve been lucky enough to see this little fellow grow in the past eight weeks, and it’s nothing short of a miracle.

With all the wonderful changes in our lives, we thought this would be a perfect time to take a brief pause.  But no worries, we’ll be back before you know it to give you more of what you love and some new surprises as well.  In the meantime, we left you this week with a double-issue! On behalf of the Outsiders, we thank you once again for all the love and support, and we’ll see you soon.

Lots of love,

I was told by a co-worker and friend that I should do something for myself that relaxes me and allows me to unwind.  The first thing I thought was, "I do hot yoga--that's relaxing."  She then reminded me that as much as yoga may be relaxing and meditative, it is also physical exertion, and that maybe I should also try doing something solely relaxing.  I asked, "Like reading?" (I hate reading).  "No, like taking pictures," she said.  At that moment I wondered if she knew that taking photographs is something I enjoy, because I told her or because she was picking up a certain energy from me that I didn't even know I was giving off.  She continued, "Something that allows you to be on the outside of your mind, that allows you to move subconsciously."  The conversation went on, and I was amazed by her ability of perception.

The very next day, I geared up and walked out the door with the intention to just take pictures.  I walked down Broadway in Astoria towards the river where Socrates Sculpture Park lives.  SSP is a great outdoor park where the sculpture exhibits are constantly changing.  It's always a great free thing to do in any season.  You're on the water, surrounded by giant sculptures made of anything other than the norm of bronze or marble.  The park also holds many events, which you can find on their website.READ MORE...

Toby's Shamrock Milkshake!

So it turns out, the last time McDonald's had the Shamrock Milkshake in NY was in '07! From what we know, the closest place is in Trenton, NJ, but who wants to go there?! So as a tribute to one of our fans who has been craving this bad boy, we've posted a recipe that we’re calling Toby’s Shamrock Milkshake.

Mint leaves (for garnish)

(Bonus)
Toby’s Slamrock:

Top Five Irish Pubs in New York

According to Pamela Skillings at About.com, “It’s not easy to pick favorites among New York's many delightful Irish pubs.” But she’s done a ton of research to break it down on authentic New York Irish pubs with the best pints and the most welcoming atmospheres....

McSorleyPhoto

1.
McSorley’s Old Ale House Established in 1854, McSorley's is New York City's oldest continuously operated saloon and offers a uniquely old-school pub experience. Take in the history, the sawdust-covered floors, and the legendary backroom where the ale flowed during Prohibition. Women have only been welcomed at McSorley's since 1970 (and the ladies'room was installed sixteen years later). There are just two kinds of beer available -- McSorley's Light and McSorley's Dark -- and you'll have to belly up to the bar to get a pint. There are no stools.

What Was the Worst Snowstorm in NYC History?

snowstorm
Photo courtesy by the New York Times

Storm of February 2006

Record-breaking snowfall blanketed New York City on February 11 and 12, 2006. Measurements taken in Central Park showed that 26.9 inches had accumulated by the storm's end. The snow fell for over 24 hours, and meterologists classified the storm as a nor'easter with winds about 20-30 mph.

In the city, the Department of Sanitation worked around the clock to remove snow from roads and walkways. The City deployed 2,500 workers to cover 12-hour shifts to handle snow clean-up.
With 25.4 inches of snow reported at LaGuardia Airport, hundreds of flights at both LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy Airports were canceled. Long Island Railroad temporarily stopped service into and out of Penn Station; Metro-North service shut down for part of the day; extensive subway delays were seen mostly on the 2, 4, 5, L and M lines; New York City's Bus service was running at 50% capacity. Despite the transportation interruptions, no serious storm-related injuries occurred.

Love in an Ice Cream Truck by Erica Miriam Fabri

To celebrate Valentine’s Day this week, we present to you a poem from Erica Miriam Fabri’s Dialect of a Skirt.

Dialect of a Skirt

Love in an Ice Cream Truck

Yesterday, I took a walk downtown. It was winter
everywhere, except for the inside of my mouth.
I saw an ice cream truck parked on 3rd Avenue.
The man inside drew me toward his window
with a whistle that reminded me of the noise
a peacock makes. He had good-looking lips,
which always gets to me, so I gave him an attitude,
“Who the hell’s gonna buy ice cream on a day
like today?” He didn’t say a word, but instead,
winked, opened the side door, kicked out a two-step
ladder and whispered, “Come in.”

Inside, everything was made of chrome. Rows
of waffle cones hung from the ceiling like Chinese
Lanterns. He pulled a sheet of brown paper
from a large roll and laid it on the floor. When I took
off his shirt, he had a tattoo of a racecar on his torso.
“Zoom, zoom,” I said, and we started making love.
He held my face in his hands as if it were a grapefruit
he was testing for ripeness, and he barely breathed.

When we stopped, the only noise was the purr
of a refrigerator. “There’s a man you love,
isn’t there?” he asked me.
“There is.”
“What does he do wrong, that made you
end up in here with me?”
“He doesn’t kiss me enough.” I said.
“Why don’t you leave him?”
“Because I like the way he sleeps.
And I like that he never prays.”

The moon crept into the truck like a thief.
“I have to go.”
He kissed me nine times from soda fountain to doorstep.
When I was almost a block away, he stuck his head
out the ice cream window and yelled: “Have you ever
seen a volcano?” I didn’t even look back. As I followed the
sidewalk south I heard his voice three more times:
“You are a volcano! You are a volcano! You are a volcano!”

Introducing Our Newest Outsider - Tara Marli

Lives: Brooklyn
What’s my thing: I’ll be your voice to the best independent films around the city.
Favorite quote: “You gonna bark all day, little doggie, or are you gonna bite?” Reservoir Dogs

My Love For NY and Becoming an Outsider:
I grew up on Staten Island, which, I know, technically doesn’t make me a true Outsider.  Although if you think about it, being from Staten Island is about as outside as you can get and still be from New York.  Like many kids growing up on that tiny rock, I had big plans, plans that didn’t include getting hitched and staying on Staten Island.  My school had a picturesque view of the Manhattan skyline and as I sat in math class I’d stare out the window and say to myself, “Someday, I’m going to live there.” My goal was to live in a loft in SoHo and be an artist.

In the meantime, I had to settle for day trips into the city.  I was (and still am) very fortunate to have a cool older brother who made it his mission to teach me about music, art and film.  On my 12th birthday, he took me to see Hairspray (the original, not the cotton-candy musical that came out a few years back.)  While my friends’ older siblings were taking them to the mall, my brother was taking me into the city to see Reservoir Dogs.  As a result, I’ve developed a life-long love for independent movies, the more out there, the better!

The dream of living in Manhattan did come true by way of a tiny dorm room at NYU, but by the time I graduated, SoHo was no longer the center of the art world and Manhattan rent was a little out of my reach.  I eventually settled in Brooklyn, but one thing hasn’t changed.  I still adore my beautiful city.  Sure, sometimes I wonder what it would be like to live someplace else, someplace quieter, less crowded.  But the minute I step off that jam-packed subway and onto the city sidewalk, I know I’m home.

Getting On The Debt Scale - Part One

Bookmark and Share

scale
by Money Mundy

Fact: According to data from Automated Access to Court Electronic Records (AACER), New York had 28,623 bankruptcy filings in the first half of this year. That means almost 3 out of every 1,000 New Yorkers you pass on the street filed for some form of Bankruptcy relief just within the first half of this year alone. You may not need to consider bankruptcy but until you assess your situation you can't possibly fully appreciate how bad or well off you are.

So how do you assess your financial health? Easy. Think about
debt like obesity. You don't get obese overnight. You gradually grow into it. Not being mindful of what you eat and not getting some form of exercise leads to a steady decline in your health. You may not show any outward signs immediately but it will eventually be obvious. Debt works in much the same way. It starts with that one 0% interest credit card then another card and then one unhealthy financial move at a time and you're financially out of shape and suffering from DEBT FAT. Its obvious when we're out of shape physically; the scale tells us, our friends tell us, the way our clothes don't fit or we get out of breathe walking up a flight of stairs tells us. But what or who tells us when we are financially out of shape? Math. I know, I can hear the sighs of defeat already.

The great news is there are tons of FREE web tools that do the math for you. So let's take a trip over to the "credit card scale" and look at your unsecured
debt fat. However, before we do, I want you to know you are in great company. There are good, hard-working, responsible people in debt. You just can't see them. No one will run into you on the street and ask how your debt-to-income ratio is or  proceed to tell you how close to eviction they may be. We do not discuss our debt...

Cindy's Bucket List - New York Public Library

New York Public Library
New York Public Library - I went to the main library in the hopes of catching the reading of "Where the Wild Things Are" by some of the cast members from the movie, but by the time I got there they were at capacity. I should have known. I would have been more bummed had it not been at the New York Public Library, one of my favorite places in the city to wander through in solitude. This is a place I have come back to time and time again over the years when I just wanted to step out of the midtown hustle on Fifth Avenue-- and I always instantly felt at peace. There is something special about walking through the stacks of books housed in this building, even though I have to admit that I have seldom actually grabbed a book off the shelf. On my last visit I just wandered through the main spaces admiring the architecture. Then I went outside, grabbed one of the metal chairs strewn in front of the steps and watched the people rushing past.

Marie's Crisis Cafe - My boyfriend introduced me to Rose's Turn when I was looking for an "only in NYC" spot to take a friend visiting from Texas. Over the past few years we've gone back to Rose's Turn when we wanted a fun night out, but for whatever reason we had never stepped foot in Marie's Crisis, only a few doors down. So when Rose's Turn sadly closed last year, I was at a loss for that hole-in-the-wall space where my spirit was lifted as soon as I walked in the door... and then, on a friend's recommendation, we finally went to Marie's Crisis Cafe. What fun! A big ol' sing-along! The piano bar has been there for over 35 years and it shows, but who cares when the crowd is so friendly, the drinks are reasonable and show tunes never stop? I really can't believe that it took me so long to check out Marie's Crisis. I'll definitely drop in the next time I'm in NYC.

Deena's Art Scene - Kandinsky at the Guggenheim

kandinsky36.JPG

I enjoy good energy.  Whether it be within living beings, landscapes of nature, or man-made objects, there is energy in all.  And it is all relative... If i feel uneasy energy in a place, I leave, if i feel captivating energy in a person, I spend as much time with they as I like.  Life is what we make it, and we have the ability to wake up, brush our teeth, throw on a fo-furry vest and be on our way, we go.  For most of us, our legs take us there, and for the fortunate ones, out hearts take us there.  If unfortunately, out legs are not working or do not exists, as long as we are breathing, our heart is pumping and in that, nothing can inhibit our movement if we have will.  On wednesday afternoon, my heart, my legs, and my will brought me to the Guggenheim.  I enjoy the energy that Frank Lloyd Write architected in those walls... READ MORE...

Russ and Daughters - As soon as I walked into Russ & Daughters the smell of smoked fish overpowered me and put a big smile on my face. It was exactly what I was looking- for the old school, Jewish deli experience that makes this place such a gem on the Lower East Side. I stopped by in the late afternoon which was just the right time because there wasn't a line (because what's kept me from stopping by in the past were the long lines). I was craving a bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon combo... a classic. The guy behind the counter was incredibly helpful and explained the various styles of smoked fish in the display cases. My mouth was watering. I happily left Russ & Daughters with my coffee, bagel, some dried fruits and a piece of halva- HEAVENLY.

Cindy's Bucket List - Whitney Museum

Whitney Museum - It had been years since I'd been to the Whitney Museum, but I was so glad that I made the trek to the Upper East Side for the current Georgia O'Keefe: Abstraction exhibit (through January 11). The exhibition includes over 100 paintings, drawings, watercolors, and sculptures by O'Keeffe as well as selected photographs from Alfred Stieglitz’s famous portrait series of O’Keeffe. It is a truly breathtaking exhibit, without all of the “typical” Georgia O’Keefe flower paintings. I enjoyed it so much that I walked through it twice. Another nice surprise was the Dan Garham: Beyond exhibit (ended October 11). I was not familiar with his work prior to this exhibit, but my friends and I had such a great time exploring his interactive works that I have now done a little reading up on this artist. After our visit to the Whitney we walked over to the Central Park Boathouse and drank a glass of wine on their deck overlooking The Lake. Although it was a super windy day we stayed for a while watching various groups of locals and tourists paddle out in their rented canoes. It is such a relaxing spot in the middle of this bustling city... I might have to swing by again before I leave.

Metropolitan Museum's Roof Garden - I met a friend for cocktails on the roof of the Met at sunset- what an amazing view, especially once the sun started to set behind the Central Park and the architectural background on the west side. It was a Friday night, so the roof garden stayed open until 8PM... and it was packed. And why wouldn't it be? You get to drink strong cocktails and wander through Roxy Paine's wonderfully chaotic sculpture entitled Maelstrom (2009). To me the sculpture looked like a giant, silver tree root, but then again I was wrapped up in conversation with my friend and concentrating on my  delicious vodka cocktail full of macerated blackberries. Yum!

Seriously, Why Another Blog About New York City?

The economy, frustration & lack of creativity...

Outsiders Economy New York
It was time to do something different! After Wall Street happened and the economy crashed, most of us felt it. In the past year, all of us (and yes, we are all friends) got laid off, fired, or were finding ourselves at crossroads. It was one pity party after another. After months of bitching to one another, the question became: How can we utilize our time and hidden talents? As New Yorkers, don't we all have them? I mean nobody moves here to search for that wrap-around porch to sip on lemonade all day.

It wasn't long before we all realized we have 2 things in common. We continue to be passionate about New York City and refuse to leave but none of us are striving any longer to be superstars, hipsters or the next big thing. Then the question became, how can we be resourceful on finding ways to keep our sanity while still having fun? So through our own experiences, interviews & everything in between, our goal with this blog is to reach out to New Yorkers who STILL want to fit in without 'fitting in'. We hope you enjoy what we've done. Without furthur ado, we present to you The Five Outsiders...

Coney Island: "Vavavoom! I think it’s so great that there are girls out there willing to strut their stuff in true pin-up girl style..."

No, I'm not about to kick the bucket! But I am after much scrutinizing and contemplation, taking a job in Texas, which means sadly New York, I must take a leave of absence.

This list is in no particular order. Some of these places I have been to before, and some I want to make sure I go at least once before I leave. NYC is changing so fast, who knows if these places will still be around when I come back...

Far Rockaway/ Rockaway Taco Stand- (95-19 Rockaway Beach Blvd at Beach 96th St, Rockaway, Queens; 347-213-7466) I’m so happy that I ventured out to Far Rockaway on one of the last sunny (although incredibly windy... or was that just out in Far Rockaway?) days right before Labor Day weekend. Not only did I feel a million miles away from Manhattan, but the fish tacos were every bit as good as all the hype I’d heard about them. Since my boyfriend and I went out on a weekday we didn’t experience much of a wait, and we even got a table on the outdoor patio.  Talk about being transported!  The laid back surfer vibe was not at all what I expected to experience in NYC.... but it is definitely there. We shared an order of guacamole and chips, which were perfectly executed, and a black bean and plantain quesadilla, one of my favorite flavor combos. We each had a delicious fried fish taco--perfectly battered and seasoned tilapia with spicy mayo. My boyfriend also had a chorizo taco, which he seemed to thoroughly enjoy. And all of the food was even better topped with the smoky salsa negra that’s in squeeze bottles on all of the tables. After this very satisfying lunch we took a stroll on the beach only a couple of blocks away.  All in all it was a perfect day.

Cindy's Bucket list - Coney Island

7834_144543613337_779363337_3545181_7096205_n
Headed out with friends to Coney Island for one last summer hurrah on Labor Day. The impetus for the outing was the Pin-Up Girl Contest at Cha-Cha's that was part of The Third Annual Coney Island Rockabilly/Burlesque Festival... but we actually ended up spending most of the day sitting on Cha-Cha’s patio on the Boardwalk people-watching, soaking up the sun and drinking many beers. FANTASTIC! Another highlight of the day was riding on the Cyclone (which I said I would never do again because of the inevitable whiplash) and the fantastic junk food that abounds on the Coney Island Boardwalk. We did finish our day by catching the end of the Pin-Up Contest. Vavavoom! I think it’s so great that there are girls out there willing to strut their stuff in true pin-up girl style. I really hope that the essence of Coney Island never disappears, because it really is such a special part of NYC.
