ARTIST STATEMENT:

My art mostly consists of ironic juxtaposition. I compare symbols of power and wealth to the symbols of the flip side of that very coin. For example, in “Congo River Luxury,” it looks like it could be a lot of places in the world, but specifically, I was looking at Africa with the child soldiers and the European powers coming in taking the resources. As you can see, I’m also appropriating straight off our fashion advertising, where I have Michael Kors stepping out of his
W magazine’s big glossy spread and docking onto an impoverished country.

Graffiti Art in SoHo

iphone pic of the week
Photo by Jose Rolon for fiveoutsiders.com on his iPhone

If for any reason you decided that the art galleries in SoHo aren’t what you’re looking for, you might want to check out what’s going on outdoors. Right in the parking lot on the corner of Wooster and Grand, you’ll find a piece by controversial contemporary artist, Frank Shepard Fairey. He’s widely known for his Obama “HOPE” poster, and is featured in Banksy’s movie, Exit Through the Gift Shop, which our very own Tara has reviewed. If this is your thing, then don’t hesitate to check what’s around the corner of this building on the Wooster side. You’ll love it!

Artists:
Mike and Doug Stern
Website: metmuseum.org
Exhibit: Doug + Mike Starn on the Roof: Big Bambú
When: Running until October 31, 2010 (weather permitting)
Where: The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden at the Met

THE SHOWCASE:

Invited by The Metropolitan Museum of Art to create a site-specific installation for The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden, twin brothers Mike and Doug Starn (born in New Jersey in 1961) present their new work,
Big Bambú: You Can't, You Don't, and You Won't Stop. The monumental bamboo structure, measuring 100 feet long, 50 feet wide, and 50 feet high, takes the form of a cresting wave that bridges realms of sculpture, architecture, and performance. Visitors witness the continuing creation and evolving incarnations of Big Bambú as it is constructed throughout the spring, summer, and fall by the artists and a team of rock climbers. Set against Central Park and its urban backdrop, Big Bambú suggests the complexity and energy of an ever-changing living organism. It is the thirteenth consecutive single-artist installation on the Roof Garden.

THE ARTIST STATEMENT:
“It is a temporary structure in a sense, but it is a sculpture—not a static sculpture, it’s an organism that we are just a part of—helping it to move along. We will be constructing a slice of seascape, like our photographs, a cutaway view of a wave constantly in motion—our growth and change remains invariable, it is constant and unchanged.” - Mike Starn

Upcoming Shows: The Composite Landscape & HOMEGROWNLIC Portraits

THE ARTIST STATEMENT:
The artist statement is a real challenge.  I grew up upstate in Ithaca, New York.   I found photography in my senior year in college, so I finished an English degree at Earlham College and then went straight into another BA in photography at RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology).  I have been freelancing in New York City since 2001.  I hope to bring my work and my name forward this year in a new way and also nurture my place in the community, which I feel truly blessed to be a part of.   Is that a digression from the artist statement?

THE SHOWCASE:
I make photographs, both traditional film and digital.  I make art because it’s my impulse, and I try to do creative things whenever and to whatever I can in life.  I also take a lot of pictures for the pure sake of commerce and the requirements of capitalism.

Article by: Deena

I was told by a co-worker and friend that I should do something for myself that relaxes me and allows me to unwind.  The first thing I thought was, "I do hot yoga--that's relaxing."  She then reminded me that as much as yoga may be relaxing and meditative, it is also physical exertion, and that maybe I should also try doing something solely relaxing.  I asked, "Like reading?" (I hate reading).  "No, like taking pictures," she said.  At that moment I wondered if she knew that taking photographs is something I enjoy, because I told her or because she was picking up a certain energy from me that I didn't even know I was giving off.  She continued, "Something that allows you to be on the outside of your mind, that allows you to move subconsciously."  The conversation went on, and I was amazed by her ability of perception.

The very next day, I geared up and walked out the door with the intention to just take pictures.  I walked down Broadway in Astoria towards the river where Socrates Sculpture Park lives.  SSP is a great outdoor park where the sculpture exhibits are constantly changing.  It's always a great free thing to do in any season.  You're on the water, surrounded by giant sculptures made of anything other than the norm of bronze or marble.  The park also holds many events, which you can find on their website.READ MORE...

My genre is dark fantasy mixed with high fashion.  My medium is photography and I use a Canon 5D and a lot of hand-crafted props in my photos.  I love to keep the photos honest and make sure to build all my props and avoid using Photoshop.  What you see is what you get!
Making art is the single most important thing in my life.  It allows me to express myself in a way that I couldn't live without.
THE ARTISTS’ STATEMENT:
Over the years I have realized that two hundredths of a second is almost impossible to understand; our time In this world goes by extremely fast.  I’ve noticed that photography mimics memory.  Like memory, photography is the only medium that can capture a fraction of a second and keep it forever.  Just like a nostalgic thought, the photograph remembers something unseen by many, an intimate fraction of time with the subject.

Video: Check out this great video on youtube.
Featured Art: Untitled

THE SHOWCASE:
I make art because I was never taught how to play sports.  Art is fun because you can tell a story by creating a single image.

It’s hard to define what genre my work fits into.  I try to take all of the things that inspire me and mash them up while still maintaining some originality. I use all kinds of things: markers, pens, Wite-Out, Adobe Flash. I’m into painting, sketching, animating, etc.--whatever helps me deliver the finished product.

THE ARTIST'S STATEMENT:  I like the fact that people look at my art and have their own interpretations and theories as to what inspired each image. I don’t do it to change the world. I do it to get the ladies. Hahaha. Oh, and because I like to do it.

Music is actually a really important part of the process. The music I’m listening to impacts the outcome of the image. Sometimes a random drawing will expand into a more elaborate one. Sometimes it could be off the top of my head, or there are those rare, happy mistakes.

THE SHOWCASE:

Nelson Seda, aka CHIEF 69 (born in 1991, resides in the South Bronx), has done it all from B-boying on stage with Soul Sonic Force to reciting poems alongside La Bruja.  He is most noteworthy for his art, which has been featured in shows and auctions alongside world-renowned artists, such as TATS CRU, Crash, COPE 2, etc... He spends his time doing freelance work throughout NYC and consistently has about six shows per month featuring his art, dance, and poetry.   He leads his artistic generation by leaps and bounds with an already impressive resume before having reached the age of 20.

THE ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
I make art to simply make the viewer stop in their tracks as they catch sight of the array of colors, detail or sheer curiosity of my works.

My process is spontaneous even outside of my freelance work, because a free mind can never disappoint one's aspirations for their planned work.

The artwork that I create is usually "abstract meets geometrics," cartooning and tattoo designs with a very distinct influence of graffiti/street  art.

Definition limits enlightenment.  My true art is very organic.  It grows, it thrives, it blossoms, it changes, it dies, it's re-born and is a friend and a confIdante. Thank you for being a friend, traveling down the road and back again.  Universal art is inherent in all.  The questions one poses to oneself,  I feel,  allow this inner beauty to flow.  It's not for all to experience first hand, for if this were the case, there would be a perfect place here for us to live.

THE ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
Art reminds us of our humanity.

The majority of this work is an attempt to visually recreate an enduring version of the psychological trauma caused by existence while still preserving the free will of the viewer to see and feel
whatever they want.  By denying space I hope to confront the viewer with the gravity of a burned, scraped and scarred surface/psyche, while other works in the portfolio attempt to make the boredom of living visceral or at least interesting.

THE SHOWCASE:
I have always been creative, and played music for many years. Once I decided to stop doing music, when I felt like it wasn't making me happy anymore and seemed like more work than fun, I really started getting into photography more and more. I think it was buying a digital camera that really got me going, as I was able to shoot as much as I wanted, and didn't have to worry about film or developing costs. It's ironic when I think about it now, because these days I shoot more with my film cameras than my digital, but it was at that point that really made me look at the world differently. I could bring my little PowerShot wherever I went, and having a camera with me all the time has made me notice things I wouldn't have otherwise. I find inspiration everywhere, whether it be from music, nature or from other artists that I have found on Etsy and Flickr. There is so much amazing talent out there, that it's humbling really. I make art for myself, but I do have a few artist friends whose opinions I value, and it's always nice to get their feedback on new work. READ MORE...

THE ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
"I would like to bring something out there to people. I don’t want to be pinned down to one type of material, and I enjoy working with different things and subject matter.  Although I like working with the figure the most, I want to be able to explore all kinds of things and ways to make something come to life. The most important thing to me is to be able to tell the stories I want to tell and to be able to paint someone so that someone can see them and really get what they are about, or maybe a certain side of them even if they don’t know them.”
When painting I enjoy working from photographs and collecting images. For me it’s easier than trying to work with a live model or outside.  At least with photographs they will stay there for as long as you need them, and you can arrange them all together in any way you want. And you don’t have someone staring over you or anything.

The Showcase:
Slowly pacing around the perimeter of Union Square, attempting to gussy up courage to approach strangers to ask them personal questions about their art, I felt a bright energy on the inside circle of the many kiosks lining the pavement of the park.  I looked over and she was bouncing to music from a bongo set further into the park, and she smiled.  She was engaged in another conversation.  I didn't want to interrupt, so I kept pacing with intent to revisit her energy when she was available to talk.

I visited some other tables and came back.  She was still in conversation, so i just started nervously thumbing through the small medium and larger prints that she was selling.  Some originals were showcased, and the tiny prints didn't do the real things justice!  They were still aesthetically appealing with their colors and movement but didn't have the same impact as the originals did, with their size, texture, and energy!
family-of-light_2

Finally she noticed, perhaps, that I wanted to ask her a thing or two.  As we started, suddenly and abruptly an older, overweight, sloppy but kind man approached her and asked if she was channeling a certain energy in her art.  Their exact transference of words, i don't recall, but it was captivating and instead of being annoyed that he intervened on what I thought would give me answers, I stood listening and watching and smiling.

Their interaction was more telling than any amateur questions I could think to ask...

Deena's Art Scene - Kandinsky at the Guggenheim

kandinsky36.JPG

I enjoy good energy.  Whether it be within living beings, landscapes of nature, or man-made objects, there is energy in all.  And it is all relative... If i feel uneasy energy in a place, I leave, if i feel captivating energy in a person, I spend as much time with they as I like.  Life is what we make it, and we have the ability to wake up, brush our teeth, throw on a fo-furry vest and be on our way, we go.  For most of us, our legs take us there, and for the fortunate ones, out hearts take us there.  If unfortunately, out legs are not working or do not exists, as long as we are breathing, our heart is pumping and in that, nothing can inhibit our movement if we have will.  On wednesday afternoon, my heart, my legs, and my will brought me to the Guggenheim.  I enjoy the energy that Frank Lloyd Write architected in those walls... READ MORE...
