Interview by: José

Mikey Palms was hired to DJ our wedding back in May, and he did a fantastic job. Chatting with him, I quickly realized that there was a lot more to this man than his turntables...

About being an entrepreneur: “What I’m learning is that you can’t put all your
hard boiled eggs in the same fridge. You gotta spread that mustard a bit - especially in New York City”

Fifth Avenue
NYP_Fifth Avenue

Dramatically lit and decorated, the stretch of Fifth Avenue between 50th and 59th Street is truly a visual experience. The lights, flags and banners draw your eyes up to the sky, making avenue grand in scale.

The sidewalks are usually packed with tourists coming to window shop and visit Rockefeller Center. Among the many high-end stores there are Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman and Tiffany’s. Bring your credit card!

Telephone Bar, Second Avenue
kitty

The outside of this East Village bar is striking. The bar uses old-fashioned British telephone booths, painted bright red. On the inside, you can order a mix of US and UK food, from English Stilton cheese fritters to New York Times fish and chips (yes, that's fried scrod and potatoes wrapped in our hometown newspaper).

You can satisfy your liquid cravings for the Continent, too. A huge selection of beers includes old favorites like Guiness and Bass, as well as esoteric labels from Belgium and Germany.

Amid the Clutter on St. Mark's Place

Photo by Kitty from New York Portraits

St. Mark's Place between 2nd and 3rd Avenues has long been known for being edgy and alternative. Crowding the sidewalks are a mix of stores--tattoo parlors, bars, Japanese restaurants, and street vendors selling everything under the sun. There are signs everywhere. In recent years some chain restaurants have moved in, making the area more mainstream.

The street is a popular hangout for kids and tourists, making it a relatively safe place, even at 3:00 A.M.

While I was taking photographs one recent afternoon, I was spotted by a group of kids. Looks like they were skipping school and eating pizza.

Hats for Sale, Little Italy
NYP_Bella Mimo
Photo by Kitty from New York Portraits

At Bella Mimo, a small store on Mulberry Street, you can get hats, t-shirts, sunglasses and souvenirs until late at night. Little Italy is known for its large Italian restaurants that cater to tourists, but there are some small stores, too.

There are many such shops scattered around New York. Very few have sales people sitting outside, minding the merchandise. When I took this photo, it must have been well below freezing with the wind chill.

ABOUT: I’m an architect and I live in Brooklyn. I post about New York life; working on homes for the fabulously wealthy; my boyfriend, Mark; his car, Clive; and our cat and dog. I take photos daily on a Canon G5 and Canon 40D. I am excited to post exclusive portraits of New York here at The Five Outsiders.

A group of giddy Santas crowd around a “Naughty Pole” for a group photo.

Santas around pole
Photo by Kitty from New York Portraits in Washington Square Park, in the Village.

This past weekend, the annual SantaCon met for its 16th year. Hundreds of Santas congregated in several locations around New York City in Washington Square Park, Staten Island, Queens and Brooklyn.

The rules are simple: dress like Santa Claus and bring canned donations for a food bank. Last year's SantaCon raised 1,000 lbs. of food for the needy in NYC.

SantaCon also takes place in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tokyo and Antarctica. There is much drinking and revelry involved.
