The Marriage Equality March

On Sunday, September 27th, hundreds of us marched across the Brooklyn Bridge in support of Marriage Equality.

The event held by Marriage Equality New York (MENY) is an all-inclusive organization whose mission is to educate the public by raising awareness of the important right of all persons to enter into legally recognized gender neutral civil marriage with all the benefits and responsibilities that entails. Without marriage, committed same-sex couples are denied over 1,138 federal rights and obligations including social security, hospital visitation, co-parenting rights, estate tax, and immigration, just to name a few.

Their four-point approach is education, media, partnerships, and political advocacy. For more information go to meny.us

Farmer’s Market, Union Square

Operating throughout the year on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday is the superb farmer's market in Union Square (14th Street/Broadway).

Open between 8 a.m. until 6 p.m., the market offers a great range of organic and traditional foodstuffs and some great home cooked pies!

Graffiti Art in SoHo

If for any reason you decided that the art galleries in SoHo aren’t what you’re looking for, you might want to check out what’s going on outdoors. Right in the parking lot on the corner of Wooster and Grand, you’ll find a piece by controversial contemporary artist, Frank Shepard Fairey. He’s widely known for his Obama “HOPE” poster, and is featured in Banksy’s movie, Exit Through the Gift Shop, which our very own Tara has reviewed. If this is your thing, then don’t hesitate to check what’s around the corner of this building on the Wooster side. You’ll love it!

Long Beach, Long Island

Folks are still taking advantage of what’s left of the summer. Long Beach would be the easiest to get to by the Long Island Railroad through Penn Station. The best part is that it isn’t too crowded during the week. A lot of New Yorkers who refuse to frequent NYC beaches claim Long Beach as the first acceptable beach to venture to.

Fighting Fires and Saving Lives, in the West Village

Squad 18's firehouse on West 10th Street was built in 1892. Like most FDNY locations in New York, its door is bright red and decorated with a hand-painted mural.

Squad 18 specializes with retrieving hazardous materials. They fight regular fires, too. Their 'rig', or firetruck, carries 500 gallons of water to every emergency.

Sadly, the company lost seven of its men on September 11, 2001. Since they routinely risk their lives to save others, the FDNY is known for being 'New York's bravest'.
