Leroy Dog Run

Address: Leroy St., off the West Side Highway, West Village
Website: Pamper-Ur-Pets

Now that the weather is getting better, it’s time to exercise, my friends. Grab your folks, and head down to dog run on Leroy Street. What’s great is the park attracts responsible dog owners who watch their dogs, not like other ones I won’t mention. But what I really love is that during the summer there is a kiddie pool for doggie dips. CANNON BALL!

Lives: Tribeca
Relationship: Adopted younger sister
Age: 1-year-old

Sasha: So I picked you this week because I’m a little nervous about going out there interviewing other cats.
Kathy Griffin: OK, but remember you promised you would have Dad put catnip under my pillow tonight.
S: I won’t forget. Alright, here we go. Where did you get adopted?
K: My two Dads adopted me and my sister, Nala, at Bide-A-Wee Adoption Center which is on 410 E. 38th Street on the Upper East Side.
S:
Whoa, really? That’s where Dad adopted me almost seven years ago!
K: I know silly. I’m your sister.
S: Work with me. Do you remember being there?
K: Totally! The people there are awesome! I think we were their favorites, ’cuz they would let us roam around while the other cats would stay in their cages. The other cats were totally jealous of us. The day that our dads came in was so cool! We were so nervous that we were gonna get separated, but they adopted the both of us!
S: Why is your name Kathy Griffin?
K: ‘Cuz I’m a crazy redhead with a fun personality.
S: Were you nervous when you met me?
K: Uh, yeah! Duh. Dad forgot to tell us there was a pitbull waiting for us when we got home. You have a BIG, scary head!
S: What do you think of me now?
K: I think you’re a bug-a-boo!
S: Funny. So what do you like to eat?
K: I LOVE Friskies with beef and gravy! YUMMY!! Then Dad gives us a bit of Purina Kitten Chow afterwards as a hard treat.
S: Do you have a favorite toy?
K: Ooh, I like the cat toy chaser with the ball inside, AND it has cat nip in the middle! I play that for hours.
S: Do you know where Dad likes to get all our stuff?
K: Yeah! They LOOOVE Canis Minor, which is at 106 Reade Street. The girls that work there are awesome and SUPER friendly!
S: Done. See was that so bad?
K: Nope. Don’t forget my catnip!

Sasha: So you're the cutie that moved across the hall.  Where did your parents adopt you from?
Hoover: Biscuits and Bath, which is at 102 Franklin Street. I think they gave me the best parents!
S: Where do you hangout?
H: Oh, Biscuits and Bath is a daycare, too!  I’m totally spoiled.  I go there every day!   I’ve got at least 30 friends. It’s AWESOME!
S: Are you house trained?
H: Pretty much.  Dad hung up this bell by the door and rings it when he knows I gotta go. So now, when I gotta go, I stand by the door. I overheard him tell Mom that he hopes that by doing that, I would learn how to ring it myself.  They don’t know this yet, but I already know how.  I ring that bad boy all day when they’re away [laughs].
S:
[laughs] Isn’t it fun to mess with them?   Who’s stricter, Mom or Dad?
H: Dad! I always know I’m in trouble when I hear him [in a deep loud voice], “HOOVER!”  Mom tries, but I always sweeten her up by cuddling with her on the couch.
S: What’s your favorite part of the day?
H: The morning.  I miss them when I’m in the crate at night, so when Dad opens it up, I give a long stretch and bury my head between his legs, and he pets him me all over.  It’s awesome!
S: Do you have a favorite toy?
H: Oh yeah!  I got a stuffed dog that I love.  Is that weird? I love it when Mom and Dad say, “Get your toy!”.   I go nuts. It used to be all about my rubber duckies, but I grew out of that real fast.
S: What do you eat for your meals?
H: Iams Kibble. I had diarrhea for a long time, but now with Kibbles, it’s gotten better.
S: What about treats?
H: Kong with peanut butter in it. LOVE that.  I tried spinach last night and I actually liked it!
S: None for me, thanks. What’s your favorite spot to get scratched?
H: Ooh, right on my neck, right where the leash is - oh, and my belly!
S: Well, now that we’re neighbors, we should hang out more. I’ll ask my Dad if you can come over more.
H: Totally!

Ben
Sasha: So, I’ve seen you around the neighborhood - what do you think?
Ben: I love Tribeca! Have you seen what they’ve done with the West Side Highway this year! When it’s not freezing out, I go running with my dad almost every morning.
S: Do you ever go to the dog run?
B: Yeah, sometimes, I go to the one on Warren St between Greenwich and Chambers, but you have to be a member.
S: What’s your favorite place to shop?
B: Canis Minor which is at 106 Reade Street! It’s a dog a cat boutique joint. They used to be on West Broadway, but now they moved closer to where I live!
S:
Yeah, but now me and my dad got to walk a little further, but it’s worth their treats and the staff is great, right?
B: They are!
S: Do have a favorite treat?
B: Right now, I’m a little obsessed with the Greenies. They’re good for my teeth.
S: Well Ben, thanks for the interview.
B: No prob. ’ll be at Canis tomorrow around noon if you wanna hang.
S: I’ll see what I can do.

Lives:

mean chiuaua

Sasha: So, a chihuahua in the East Village. What’s that like?
Kiko: It’s fine, except for everybody thinking I’m Mexican. That’s where my ancestors came from, but I’m a sixth generation New Yorker!
S: Do think you guys get a bad rap?
K: Sometimes. I mean, did you see that horrible Disney movie? And I will say it - Taco Bell killed it! If I have to hear another pit-bull pass me and say “Yo Quiero Taco Bell”, I’m gonna lose it.
S: We’re not all bad. What’s your favorite place to shop?
K: Whiskers on 235 E 9th St. They’re great. They’re all bout alternative, holistic pet care. I have sensitive skin, so my parents love to go there to get me “Buddy Wash and Rinse”. It’s a shampoo & conditioner with lavender & mint! It’s made with pure botanical extracts and natural oils.
S:
Wow. I thought my Dads were gay!
K: I’m not gay! I’’m part of the metrosexual movement. I gotta look good when I go out there.
S: I agree. What about dog parks?
K: I go to the the one at Tomkins Square Park on 7th and Avenue A. I have a 20-minute limit. ‘cuz I don’t like to get too dirty.
S: Favorite place to get scratched?
K: Right under my chinny chin chin. I fall asleep in seconds!

Meet: Lulu

Lives:

Age: 11 months old

IMG_5233.JPG
Sasha: You have a cute name Lulu. Where did it come from?
Lulu: Not sure, but my real name is Lucinda, but everyone calls me Lulu except when I’m bad. Then it gets confusing because my mom starts calling me Lucy and Dad starts calling Gilly (from SNL).
S: I’m sure it’s all out of love.
L: It’s obvious Mom (Barbara) really loves me, but my Dad (Ben), I’m not so sure. I overheard him telling my mom that I should be on Prozac.
S: Really? How come?
L: Apparently, I’m always getting in trouble, but what’s wrong with chewing on what I like? Also, I tend to bark and bite big dogs [laughs].
S:
They call that the Napoleon complex and that’s exactly why we’re doing a phone interview. Maybe you just need to come out to the city to get all that energy out.
L: I keep trying to sneak out, but I always get caught. My parents think I’m still too young. They think you guys will be a bad influence on me.
S: More like the other way around. Does anything calm you down?
L: Scratching my belly!
What about shopping? Where do you go?

L: Petco. It’s the only one I know. But I heard there’s a place called The Pet Company in Garden City which close by.
S: Favorite food?
L: I like the soft Wellness canned food that Mommy gives me twice a week, then I get the dry food on the other meals.

Meet: Sookie
Background: Chocolate Lab
Lives:
Inwood
Age: Three

Sookie
Sasha: So the obvious question - were you named after that chick from True Blood?
Sookie: Everybody is always asking me that, but no. My grandma’s name was Sookie, so that’s what my mom gave me.
Sasha: How long have you been with your folks?
S: Right now it’s just me and my mom. She has boyfriend, but it’s nothing serious. You know how it is with these boys. If you don’t have them on a tight leash, it’s gets out of hand.
Sasha: Honey, you don’t have to tell me. How about dog parks in your area? Where do you hang out?
S: You bet! There’s the Inwood Hill Dog Park on West 207th and what’s that funny street name...Seaman Ave! [laughs].
Sasha: Where do you go shopping for your winter clothes?
S: Ooh shopping. Mom likes to take me to the Pet Ark! She just bought mea flannel number for Christmas!
Sasha: I bet you look good in it.
S: I do. It brings out my eyes.
Sasha: Favorite food?
S: Innova.  My mom and I are on a strict diet, so she says it’s the best!
Sasha: What’s your favorite spot to get scratched?
S: Oooh, my ears is where it’s at. EVERY TIME!!

Sasha: So handsome - you live in Astoria. How’s it going so far?
Jock: Great! I hang out at home and walk the streets of Astoria with my Mom. My Dad works a lot, so I don’t get to see him as often as I’d like, but when he comes home, I’m ready for him!

S: Do you have a favorite dog park in the area? Where do you hang out?
J: Sometimes we go to the dog park next to Astoria Park or Socrates Sculpture Park, where I can be off my leash and play with other neighborhood dogs. Got my eye on this Great Dane, Lola!

S: A little big for you, don’t you think?
J: What are you sayin’? I ain’t got what it takes?

S: I’m a jealous gal, that’s all. Let’s move on. How about pet stores in the area?
J: I like PETCO and Yayoi's Pet Star on 34th Ave. here in Astoria.

S: Favorite food?
J: Wellness Brand in the purple bag.  I like my brother’s cat food too, so Mommy has to keep it up high so I don't eat it.

S: What’s your favorite spot to get scratched?
J: Oooh, my arm pits!

S: Anything else you want to share with me?
J: If things don’t work out with Lola, can I call you?
S: We’ll see.
